Charlotte’s Most Kid-Friendly Breweries

One of the main qualities that drew us into the craft beer scene is the overall vibe.  It’s one big community of people coming together to have fun and share experiences, and everyone is welcome!  Bring your dog, your kids, your grandma – there’s fun for all!

When we had kids of our own, that vibe became even more important and we’re thankful we didn’t have to sacrifice our brewery-hopping hobby.  With that being said, we did have to become more selective in determining which spots were the best fit when we have our toddlers in tow.  Are there high chairs?  Is there space for the kids to run around?  What about diaper changes?  Check out our picks for the top kid-friendly breweries in and around the Queen City!

Easily the top spot on the list is Heist Barrel Arts.  Unlike any other Charlotte-based brewery, Heist BA has an expansive field outside of the taproom where kids can run for days.  Even better, the field is shaded by mature trees, so there’s some protection from the scorching summer Carolina sun.  On the weekends, it’s not uncommon to see other families staked out at a picnic table with a tent and toys for the kids to enjoy while the adults indulge in their favorite hazy IPA or something fruity from the Pick’n series.  In addition to the vast beer selection, Livy’s Neapolitan features wood-fired pizzas, small plates and apps.  On the app list, you’ll find some of the best pretzels and beer cheese in the area.  On a side note, while the original Heist in Noda doesn’t have the same spacious outdoor area, it does boast some fantastic (kid-approved) mac & cheese!

Next on the list is Pineville’s first brewery, Middle James Brewing Company where their motto is “Great Beer Better People”.  When the business partners have children themselves, chances are they’ve made a family-friendly environment a priority.  At Middle James, you’ll find a full kitchen serving lunch and dinner 7 days a week with options for kids.  Adults can catch their favorite sporting event on one of the 15 TVs and choose beer, wine, cider or kombucha from one of 24 taps while the kids have access to a huge field in the outdoor beer garden.  There’s also a patio overlooking a driving range and putting green.  Middle James hosts frequent events that are attractive to families – for example, brunch with Santa (I know him!), trivia, bingo and more.

Rounding out our top three is The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery.  OMB is the OG when it comes to breweries in the QC.  They offer traditional German-style beers and food, and their menu has plenty to offer the whole family.  Their outdoor Biergarten is huge – a big picnic for all!  It’s a perfect place for kids to run around and make a friend or two while climbing and balancing on the mini obstacle course.  The place is definitely built to hang out.

 And we could go on…

Honorable mentions: Fonta Flora (Whippoorwill Farm and Optimist Hall), High Branch Brewing Co, Resident Culture Brewing Company, Brewers at 4001 Yancey

Cheers!
