Beer in Miami
In short, kinda. Wynwood is still going to be your go-to spot for the highest density of beer you want to drink and food you want to eat. However, there is much more beer to find in this city if you know where to look - keep reading to find out.
Wynwood
J. Wakefield Brewing
It is a legal requirement to mention J. Wakefield when discussing Miami beer, so let’s get it out of the way. You need to go. You will enjoy the beer. You will admire the impressive Star Wars murals (and Baby Yoda dumpster). The hype is real, but so is the beer. Don’t skip the stouts even if you have been walking in the Miami heat.
Boxelder
Before leaving Wynwood, you have to make your way over to Boxelder. Another staple of ‘Best of Miami’ lists for years, this bar has everything you need in a great beer bar - great beer, places to sit, restrooms. Make sure to check out the cans and bottles for sale since this is a legit bottle shop as well. Sit out back to enjoy the Miami weather.
Kush
When I travel, I am looking for two things: great beer and great burgers. Once in a rare while I will come across a place like Kush Wynwood that does both so well I am still thinking about it weeks and months later. You will find Kush on the southern edge of Wynwood, where the gentrification hasn’t quite yet taken hold. This is a small, dark, dingy bar and yet is everything you want it to be. Make sure to explore all of the beer options, I found an Other Half IPA in the available can selection.
Other Wynwood required stops:
Veza Sur Brewing - best vibe in Miami
The Salty Donut Wynwood - enough said
Wynwood Walls - best stop for the ‘gram
Wynwood Brewing - bit of a hike from the rest of your stops
Union Beer Store
Now that you have left Wynwood, it’s time to see what else this city has to offer. Where better to see another side of Miami than Little Havana? Before you make it over to Union, swing by Sanguich de Miami and get a cubano with a coladita badito (coffee milkshake).
Union Beer Store is a great wrestling-themed bottle shop/beer bar. Located on the main drag of Little Havana (8th street), it is a great spot to grab a beer after a stroll among the Cuban themed bars and coffee shops up and down the street.
Beat Culture and Tripping Animals
These last two breweries are both near the airport, so you should avoid my mistake of hitting them up only on the way out of town. Both are worth serious consideration as the best of Miami, so plan accordingly.
Beat Culture is attached to a Days Inn which has to be one of the more unique places for a brewery I have seen. We showed up on a Tuesday afternoon right after they opened, so we had the place to ourselves, quite a change of pace from the all-day crowds of Wynwood.
Tripping Animals is a must see (drink?) stop for sour fans. Lost in the industrial wasteland around the airport, trust your GPS and give yourself some time to have a few while you admire their commitment to artwork featuring stoned animals.
